North of Luxor, along a quiet stretch of the Nile, stand two of Egypt's most remarkable temples: Dendera, home of the goddess Hathor with its famously painted ceiling, and Abydos, the holy city of Osiris with the carved jewel that is Seti I's temple.

Most visitors to Luxor never see them, which is precisely the appeal. A day trip combines both in a loop of about 150 kilometers through green farmland and desert edge.

Dendera: the Temple of Hathor

Dendera is among the best-preserved temples in Egypt. The Temple of Hathor, goddess of love, music and joy, keeps its facade, columns capped with the goddess' face, stairways to the roof and crypts with relief carvings of legendary delicacy. The astronomical ceiling, with its zodiac, was so famous that the original was removed to Paris in the 19th century; the plaster copy above is still dazzling.

Abydos: Seti I and the Osireion

Abydos was Egypt's holiest city, pilgrimage center of Osiris, lord of the afterlife. The Temple of Seti I here contains the finest relief carving in Egypt, delicate and deep, including the famous Abydos King List, a chronological roll-call of pharaohs. Behind the temple lies the strange Osireion, a megalithic island chamber associated with the tomb of Osiris himself.

How the Day Trip Works

Tours leave Luxor in the morning, visit Abydos or Dendera first (Abydos is farther), and return by late afternoon with a lunch stop en route. The drive itself, through villages and fields far from tourist crowds, is half the pleasure.
