Is Giza worth visiting?

Home to the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World, the Giza Plateau delivers Egypt's most iconic view: the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx rising directly from the desert sand.

History

The Giza Plateau served as the royal necropolis of Egypt's Fourth Dynasty, and the Great Pyramid built for Pharaoh Khufu around 2560 BCE remains the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World. Alongside it rise the pyramids of his son Khafre and grandson Menkaure, together forming the most recognizable silhouette in human history and a feat of engineering that still challenges modern understanding.

Guarding the plateau is the Great Sphinx, carved from a single limestone outcrop with the body of a lion and, most scholars believe, the face of Khafre. Smaller subsidiary pyramids, the mastaba tombs of nobles, and the reassembled Solar Boat of Khufu reveal the full scale of the necropolis and the beliefs about kingship and the afterlife that drove its construction.

Giza's significance continues into the present day with the Grand Egyptian Museum rising just beyond the plateau, purpose-built to display Tutankhamun's treasures in full for the first time and to cement Giza's place as the most visited archaeological site on Earth.

Climate

Giza shares Cairo's hot desert climate, with scorching, dry summers and mild winters, so early morning or late afternoon visits are noticeably more comfortable than midday in the warmer months.

Best Time to Visit

October to April offers the most pleasant temperatures, though visiting at opening time year-round helps avoid both the midday heat and the busiest tour-group crowds.

Book a licensed Egyptologist guide for historical context you won't get from signage alone; wear closed, sturdy shoes for the uneven plateau terrain; agree on prices in advance if approached by camel or horse-cart operators, as informal negotiation is standard practice here.
