History
Aswan marked the southern frontier of ancient Egypt, known to the Egyptians as Swenett and prized for its granite quarries, which supplied the stone for obelisks and colossal statues found throughout the country, including the Unfinished Obelisk still lying in its quarry today. Elephantine Island, at the heart of the modern city, was a key trading post between Egypt and Nubia and remains inhabited by Nubian communities known for their colorful houses and warm hospitality.
The city's most graceful monument, the Temple of Philae dedicated to the goddess Isis, was painstakingly dismantled and rebuilt on Agilkia Island during a UNESCO-led rescue campaign in the 1960s and 70s, part of a wider international effort to save Nubian monuments from the rising waters created by the Aswan High Dam. Completed in 1970, the High Dam itself remains a landmark of modern Egyptian engineering and a defining feature of the city's skyline.
Aswan's slower pace, dramatic Nile scenery, and Nubian culture make it both a rewarding destination in its own right and the classic gateway to Abu Simbel and the departure point for Egypt's most scenic Nile cruises toward Luxor.
