Safaga is a working industrial port on the Red Sea, and if you arrive expecting a resort you will be disappointed. You should not be disappointed. Safaga is three hours inland from Luxor and about 45 minutes down the coast from Hurghada, which makes it the most flexible port in Egypt for a passenger who wants to choose between temples and coral.

The distances that matter

  • Safaga to Luxor: about 3 hours, 200 kilometres
  • Safaga to Hurghada: about 45 minutes, 50 kilometres
  • Safaga to Hurghada airport: about 45 minutes
  • Safaga to Cairo: about 6 hours by road, which is why we fly rather than drive

That third line matters. Cairo is not a day trip from Safaga by road, but it is a very good two-day trip by air, and we run it.

The one everybody should do: Luxor in a day

Luxor is the reason ships call at Safaga at all. The Luxor day tour from Safaga covers both banks of the Nile in one long but well-paced day: Karnak in the morning, lunch, then the Valley of the Kings, the Colossi of Memnon and Hatshepsut's temple on the west bank in the afternoon, and back to port in the evening.

It is around twelve hours. If you only do one thing in Safaga, do this. Read our Valley of the Kings guide and Karnak guide first, because the difference between a good and a disappointing day in Luxor is largely about which tombs you are talked into.

Overnight in Luxor, and why it is better

Three hours each way is the whole argument. Stay one night and you cross the desert once instead of twice, and you get Karnak in the cooler late morning and the west bank early the next day before the heat builds. The two-day overnight Luxor trip adds Luxor Temple, the best-preserved temple complex in the country, and time for the optional hot air balloon flight or the Sound and Light show if your schedule allows.

The ambitious one: fly to Cairo, sleep in Luxor

Our two-day Cairo and Luxor tour by flight is the most ambitious thing we run from Safaga. Early drive to Hurghada airport, flight to Cairo, the pyramids and the museum, flight on to Luxor, overnight, then the Theban sites the next morning before driving back to Safaga.

One important caveat for cruise guests: a shore excursion that includes domestic flights may conflict with your cruise line's arrangements, and some lines require written permission before passengers may disembark for an overnight. Check with your ship first, and confirm the flight times with us. We will not book you onto this without that conversation.

Or skip the temples entirely

Safaga is on the Red Sea, and some of you have seen enough pyramids. The snorkelling trip from Safaga is 45 minutes to Hurghada harbour, then out onto the water over shallow coral in clear morning light, with equipment, a guide and lunch on board. It is a shared boat, so it is a sociable morning rather than a private one, and the water is at its calmest early before the wind builds.

How to choose in Safaga

  • One long day, first call: Luxor. Non-negotiable.
  • Two nights: overnight Luxor, and add the balloon or the show
  • Never seen the pyramids and want them too: the flight tour, after checking with your ship
  • Swimming over temples: the snorkelling trip

And if you genuinely have three hours spare and nothing else, walk the Safaga waterfront. It is not a destination. It is a nice hour.
