History
Cairo was founded in 969 CE by the Fatimid dynasty as al-Qahira, "the Victorious," though the wider area had already been settled for millennia, including the earlier garrison town of Fustat and the Roman fortress of Babylon that anchors Old Cairo today. Over the following centuries the city grew under the Ayyubids, Mamluks, and Ottomans into one of the great capitals of the Islamic world, earning its nickname "the city of a thousand minarets" thanks to a skyline still dominated by mosques such as Al-Azhar and Sultan Hassan.Long before Cairo existed, the Giza Plateau on its western edge was already the burial ground of Egypt's Old Kingdom pharaohs, and the city's identity has always been shaped by the monuments just beyond its streets. Cairo later became the seat of modern Egypt's monarchy and, from 1952, its republic, while Old Cairo's Hanging Church and Ben Ezra Synagogue preserve a Christian and Jewish heritage that predates Islam by centuries.Today Cairo is a vast, fast-moving capital with major collections spanning the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir and the Grand Egyptian Museum near the pyramids, making it the essential starting point for almost every journey through Egypt's ancient and living history.
Climate
Cairo has a hot desert climate with long, dry summers that often exceed 35°C and mild winters averaging around 20°C by day with cool evenings, and virtually no rainfall year-round.
Best Time to Visit
The most comfortable months are October through April, with spring (March–April) and autumn (October–November) offering the best balance of warm days and cool nights for sightseeing.
Travel Tips
Dress modestly when visiting mosques and churches, and carry a scarf for women entering religious sites; use metered taxis or ride-hailing apps rather than negotiating informally; keep small bills on hand, as tipping ("baksheesh") is customary for guides, drivers, and site attendants.
