A Dahabiya holiday invites you to experience Egypt at a different pace. Time spent watching the river becomes as memorable as the places you visit: changing light on the water, green riverbanks and quiet moments between excursions. It is an experience to consider when you want your holiday to include space to relax as well as time to explore.
The smaller scale of a Dahabiya can create a more intimate setting for your journey. Read the individual programme for its accommodation arrangements, shared spaces and services. The atmosphere, facilities and number of fellow travellers depend on the selected departure and category.
Start by comparing the embarkation point, final destination and number of nights. Do not assume that every Dahabiya follows the same route or visits the same places. Your day-by-day itinerary is the best guide to the temple visits, riverside stops and time on the water included in your holiday.
If you would like to include Luxor or Aswan in your wider trip, check how these destinations connect with your actual boarding and disembarkation points. Transfers and additional sightseeing may need separate arrangements. This is particularly useful when planning flights or hotel nights before and after the sailing.
A rewarding river holiday combines discovery with a comfortable rhythm. Look for a programme that matches your preferred balance of guided visits and downtime. Some travellers want a full schedule of monuments and excursions; others prefer more opportunities to read, take photographs or simply enjoy the passing landscape.
Visits to villages, islands or quieter riverside locations should be confirmed in the specific itinerary. They are not automatically included in every Dahabiya journey. If a particular stop matters to you, ask our team to check it before you choose your dates.
Compare the categories available for your chosen programme using their descriptions and the published pricing table. Consider the accommodation, facilities, dining arrangements and included services together. Category names alone do not describe every detail of the experience.
Meals and onboard facilities vary between programmes. Review the inclusions and discuss dietary requirements or other practical needs before booking. If you are travelling for a special occasion, share your preferences early so the available arrangements can be checked.
Use the routes and departure section to compare published starting points, durations and sailing days. Your selected date must also be available in the booking calendar. Where a programme has dated departures, check those dates rather than relying on a general weekly pattern.
Exact meeting points, check-in times and transfer arrangements are confirmed for the selected programme. Leave enough time between your arrival in Egypt, onward travel and boarding. Our team can help you review the sequence of your trip before you finalise separate travel arrangements.
A Dahabiya experience can form part of a broader Egypt holiday. You might wish to add time in Cairo and Giza, explore more of Luxor or Aswan, or finish with a stay by the Red Sea. Choose extensions around the experiences you want rather than trying to fit too many destinations into a short visit.
Additional hotels, transport and excursions are separate unless expressly listed in the programme. Ask for a clear breakdown of your proposed holiday so you can compare the complete travel plan and understand which arrangements are included.
Share your preferred dates, group size and priorities when comparing Dahabiya journeys. Couples, friends and families may have different expectations for privacy, daily activities and accommodation. Travellers with children or accessibility requirements should check suitability and any specific conditions before booking.
Published rates are per person for the stated programme and depend on the travel period, group size and category. Review adult and child prices alongside inclusions, exclusions and cancellation conditions. If the combination you need is not priced online, contact us for a quote and confirmation of availability.
A dahabiya is a small traditional sailing boat, usually six to eight cabins, and she is shallow-drafted. That is the whole point: she can moor at El Kab and the quarries at Gebel el-Silsila, where large cruise ships are not permitted to stop at all. These three run south to Aswan, and they are the versions worth taking if you have the time. Five nights gives you a full day on the river with no temple at all, which is the day people remember afterwards.

Downriver is the better direction for a short cruise, and not only because you drift with the current. Coming from the south, the sites arrive in an order that makes historical sense, and you are following Egypt forward through time at the pace of a boat. Both of these end at Esna rather than Luxor itself, and your transfer to Luxor is included, about an hour north.
