History
Luxor occupies the site of ancient Thebes, capital of Egypt during much of the Middle and New Kingdoms and the religious center of the god Amun. The temples of Karnak, expanded by successive pharaohs over nearly two thousand years, and the more intimate Luxor Temple on the Nile's east bank stand among the largest religious complexes ever built.
Across the river, the West Bank held the necropolis of Thebes, where the Valley of the Kings sheltered the tombs of Egypt's New Kingdom rulers, most famously Tutankhamun, whose intact burial was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922 and remains the most celebrated archaeological find in history. Nearby, Queen Hatshepsut's terraced mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari and the Valley of the Queens add further layers to one of the richest concentrations of ancient monuments on Earth.

Luxor has an intensely hot desert climate, with summer daytime temperatures regularly surpassing 40°C, while winters are mild, dry, and pleasant for sightseeing.

November through February is the coolest and most comfortable period, with October and March serving as good shoulder-season alternatives with fewer crowds.
