Safaga exists on the cruise map for one reason, and this is the excursion that uses it. Luxor is about three hours inland, and the monuments there justify the drive in a way that few port excursions can. It covers both banks of the Nile in a single day: Karnak and the east bank temples in the morning, then the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon on the west bank after lunch.

It is a long day, from the early start to the drive back, but the drive is broken by stops and the pacing is comfortable in a private vehicle. Karnak is vast enough to occupy a morning on its own, and the Valley of the Kings rewards a guide who can point you towards the tombs worth your time rather than the crowded ones you can skip.

Your driver understands that the return has to fit your ship's sailing time, and we build the schedule backwards from your all-aboard rather than forwards from a fixed start. Guests who have already seen the pyramids on a previous port call often find Luxor the more rewarding of the two, because the valley rewards attention in a way the plateau does not.

How your day unfolds

Your Egypt Rest Tours representative meets you at the cruise exit door with a name board and escorts you to your air-conditioned vehicle. The drive to Luxor takes approximately three hours, with a stop at a roadside rest area for refreshments.

Begin in the great hypostyle hall, where 134 columns stand in a forest of stone, then walk through the temple of Ramesses III towards the sacred lake. Your guide explains how Karnak was built and added to over two thousand years.

Cross to the west bank and continue to the Valley of the Kings, where your guide takes you into the tombs that justify the entry fee, with an optional visit to Tutankhamun's tomb.

Questions about this tour

It is the standard trip for a reason. Luxor holds the Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Hatshepsut's temple, and it is three hours inland, so if you skip it you are unlikely to get another chance on the same itinerary. The day is long, but most of it is at sites rather than in the vehicle, and the private car means you are not waiting for a coach group.

It is one of a small number of tombs with a separate ticket, and the line can be long in the middle of the day. Your guide will advise the best moment to join it based on what else you want to see, and the ticket is separate from the general admission. We have not quoted a figure here because it changes, and we would rather not print a number that turns out to be wrong.

Because there are dozens of tombs and only a handful justify the separate ticket. A guide who knows which ones are open, which are overcrowded at that hour, and which genuinely repay the entrance fee changes the whole morning. That is the main thing you are paying for here beyond transport and entries.

Luxor is hot, and much of the day is in the open. You leave Safaga around 06:30 to get the long drive done in the cool of the morning, and you are inside the tomb interiors and the temple colonnades for much of the rest. Sun protection, a hat and water are essential, and we carry bottled water in the vehicle.

Completely. Karnak is on the east bank and is a temple complex you walk through, largely in the open. The west bank is a necropolis, and its tombs are cut into the hills, so it is a slower and quieter kind of visit.
