This trip is for guests who find Giza slightly disappointing, and that is not a criticism of them. Everyone photographs the three great pyramids. Far fewer make the short drive south to Saqqara, and Saqqara is the place where the pyramid was actually invented.

Djoser's Step Pyramid at Saqqara is the first of its kind, roughly a century older than Khufu's. Standing in its shadow after a morning on the Giza plateau is genuinely strange, because the direction of travel suddenly becomes obvious. What looked finished at Giza looks experimental at Saqqara.

Saqqara is a quieter site than Giza, and the necropolis around it spreads over a huge area of tombs cut into the desert rock. Both sites together make a fuller day than the pyramids alone, and this is the version we recommend for anyone with more than one morning in Egypt.

How your day unfolds

Meet your Egypt Rest Tours representative at the cruise exit door. You are walked to your air-conditioned private vehicle for the roughly three-hour drive to Cairo.

Arrive at the Giza complex. Your guide explains the plateau's geology and the chronology of the three pyramids, then walks you to the base of the Great Sphinx. Free time for photographs follows.

Lunch at a local restaurant in Giza.

Travel south to Saqqara, Egypt's oldest burial ground. Your guide takes you into Djoser's complex to see the Step Pyramid, the mortuary temple and the South Tomb, then along the Serapeum, where the giant underground galleries hold the coffins of the sacred Apis bulls.

Drive back to Port Said and arrive at the cruise terminal with time to spare.

Questions about this tour

Because it is where the form was invented. Djoser's Step Pyramid there is the first monumental stone building in Egypt, built about a century before Khufu's. Giza shows you the finished result; Saqqara shows you the experiment that made it possible, and the two together tell the story properly.

It generally is, and the necropolis spreads far further than the plateau, so the crowds thin out quickly once you are away from the entrance.

A complex of underground galleries beneath the Saqqara plateau where the coffins of the Apis bulls were kept. The Apis was the sacred bull associated with Ptah at Memphis, and the cult of it ran for centuries.

It is, but a comfortable one. The drive is about three hours each way, and the afternoon at Saqqara is a more open, less crowded site than the plateau. It suits guests who are comfortable on their feet and want more than one site.

Your guide will explain what is open at the time of your visit and what is not, and the cost of any interior tickets is separate and paid on site. We have not quoted a figure here because it changes, and we would rather not print something that turns out to be wrong.

The camel and horse rides are at the Giza Plateau, outside the site fence, and are optional and paid on the spot. Saqqara is a site visit rather than a ride stop.
