Your Cairo experience, made effortless

Everyone photographs the pyramids of Giza. Far fewer make the short drive south to Saqqara, where Djoser's Step Pyramid shows what the Giza monuments were still learning to become. On this excursion you see both, and the contrast between them is the point of the day.

Giza gives you scale and spectacle. Saqqara gives you origin: the first monumental stone building in Egypt, built in the 27th century BC, and the vast necropolis that followed it. Standing in the Step Pyramid's shadow after looking at Khufu's is genuinely strange, because the direction of travel suddenly becomes obvious.

Saqqara is also far quieter than Giza, which many guests prefer. You are driven privately from Port Said, guided by your own Egyptologist, and returned to the terminal in good time for boarding.

Your route

How your day unfolds

Port Said port, around 07:00 — Meet your Egypt Rest Tours representative at the cruise exit door. You are walked to your air-conditioned private vehicle for the roughly three-hour drive to Cairo.

11:00, Giza Plateau — Arrive at the Giza complex. Your guide explains the plateau's geology and the chronology of the three pyramids, then walks you to the base of the Great Sphinx. Free time for photographs follows.

13:00, lunch — Lunch at a local restaurant in Giza.

14:30, Saqqara — Travel south to Saqqara, Egypt's oldest burial ground. Your guide takes you into Djoser's complex to see the Step Pyramid, the mortuary temple and the South Tomb, then along the Serapeum, where the giant underground galleries hold the coffins of the sacred Apis bulls.

17:00, return — Drive back to Port Said and arrive at the cruise terminal with time to spare.
