The pyramids at Giza are the reason most people come to Egypt. Saqqara, forty minutes further south, is where the form was invented. Visiting both in one day gives you the complete story: first the finished masterpieces, then the experimental step pyramid that made them possible.
Saqqara also solves a practical problem. The Giza plateau can be crowded and exposed, while Saqqara is quieter, cooler and far more photogenic.
