Not every port call needs a three-hour drive. Alexandria's archaeological sites sit within a few kilometres of the cruise terminal, and this half-day tour is the sensible choice when your ship is in port for a morning or an afternoon, or when a full day in Cairo would be more than you want.

Alexandria is a layered city. Beneath the Bibliotheca and the corniche, the ground is still Roman: the catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa were cut from living rock beside a temple of Serapis, and Pompey's Pillar was raised in AD 298 in honour of the emperor Diocletian, carved by Egyptian craftsmen from a single block of red granite quarried at Aswan. The day moves from the excavated Roman quarter to the medieval fortress of Qaitbay, so you cover several centuries in a morning.

How your day unfolds

Your guide and driver meet you at the cruise exit door. No long transfer is needed: the sites are all close to the terminal.

Begin at the excavated Roman area and Pompey's Pillar, raised in AD 298 in honour of the emperor Diocletian, carved by Egyptian craftsmen from a single block of red granite quarried at Aswan.

Descend into the catacombs. These galleries were carved out of a hillside tomb beneath the temple of Serapis, and combined Greek funerary decoration with Egyptian burial customs: painted reliefs, a carved table of offerings and a distinctly Egyptian burial hall.

The modern library whose disc-shaped roof rises beside the corniche, built to commemorate the ancient library that once held hundreds of thousands of scrolls.

Because the sites are close and a half-day is enough for them. If you would rather use the full day for Cairo, our day trip to Cairo from Alexandria takes in the pyramids, the museum and Khan El Khalili and returns to the same terminal, and it is worth the three-hour drive each way.

The catacombs at Kom El Shoqafa involve descending stairs and uneven ground below street level, and it is the most physically demanding part of the tour. Tell us about mobility needs when you book and we will tell you honestly how much of the route we would leave out.
