The White Desert is Egypt at its most otherworldly: a national park of wind-carved chalk monoliths, mushrooms, ice-cream cones and frozen waves glowing white under the sun and silver under the moon. Few places on Earth feel this much like another planet.
Reached through the Bahariya Oasis, about four hours from Cairo, the White Desert is the centerpiece of Egypt's desert tourism and works best as an overnight camping trip. Here is what to expect.
Bahariya Oasis, the Gateway
Bahariya is a pocket of date palms and hot springs in the Western Desert, home to the golden mummies discovered in the 1990s and the starting point for all White Desert trips. Tours meet the desert crew here, switch to 4WD vehicles and set off into the sand.
Black Desert and Crystal Mountain
En route to the White Desert, the track crosses the Black Desert, hills dusted with iron-oxide gravel like burnt toast, and stops at Crystal Mountain, a ridge of sparkling quartz crystal embedded in the rock. Both are short, stunning photo stops.
The White Desert Itself
The national park protects a sea of white chalk formations sculpted by millennia of wind. At sunset the rocks blush pink; under the moon they glow. Camp is set among the formations, dinner is cooked on the fire, and the night sky, far from any city light, is overwhelming.

How the Tour Works
Our two-day tour leaves Cairo in the morning, reaches Bahariya by midday, crosses the Black Desert and Crystal Mountain in the afternoon, camps in the White Desert overnight and returns to Cairo the next evening. Everything, transport, crew, 4WD, meals and camping equipment, is included.
