Your Luxor experience, made effortless

The drive from Safaga to Luxor is about three hours, and the round trip is what turns a long day into something restful. Stay one night and you cross the desert once instead of twice, and you get the Theban sites at the best possible times: Karnak in the cool of the late morning, the west bank monuments the following morning before the heat builds.

Day one covers the east bank, dominated by Karnak's hypostyle hall and the temple of Luxor itself, which is one of the best-preserved temple complexes in Egypt. Day two crosses to the west bank for the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's terraced temple and the Colossi of Memnon, then turns back to the coast.

Overnight in a five-star hotel in Luxor, with your own guide and vehicle for both days. The Sound and Light show at Karnak and a hot air balloon flight are both available if your ship's schedule allows, and we will check the timings with you before you book.

Day-by-day itinerary

Safaga Port, around 07:00 — Your Egypt Rest Tours representative meets you at the cruise exit door. The drive to Luxor takes approximately three hours, with a rest stop on the way.

10:30, Karnak Temple — Your guide takes you through the great hypostyle hall, where 134 columns stand in a forest of stone, and on into the temple of Ramesses III and towards the sacred lake.

12:30, lunch — Lunch at a local restaurant in Luxor.

14:00, Luxor Temple — The second great temple, begun under Amenhotep III over 3,000 years ago and still one of the best-preserved sites in the country, linked to Karnak by the avenue of sphinxes.

16:00, hotel check-in — Transfer to the Sonesta St. George hotel, in the centre of Luxor. Evening free.

Optional, seasonal — The Sound and Light show at Karnak, and a hot air balloon flight over the west bank. Both depend on season and on your ship's timings; we will confirm what is possible when you book.

08:30, the Colossi of Memnon — Two colossal seated statues of Amenhotep III, 18 metres high, that have stood at the entrance to the west bank for 3,400 years.

09:00, the Valley of the Kings — Your guide takes you into the tombs that justify the visit, rather than the crowded ones you can walk past, with an optional visit to Tutankhamun's tomb.

11:30, Hatshepsut's Temple — The mortuary temple of Egypt's only female pharaoh, cut into the cliff in three terraces.

13:00, lunch — Lunch at a local restaurant in Luxor, then check out.

15:00, return to Safaga — The drive back to port takes approximately three hours, timed so you arrive with a comfortable margin before your ship sails.
