History
Fayoum is one of Egypt's oldest continuously inhabited regions, centered on Lake Qarun, one of the world's most ancient natural lakes, and the site of the pharaonic city of Shedet, later known to the Greeks as Crocodilopolis for its cult worship of the crocodile god Sobek. Ptolemaic and Roman-era communities such as Karanis left behind substantial ruins that still stand amid the surrounding desert.
Beyond its ancient history, Fayoum holds a site of global scientific significance in Wadi Hitan, or the Valley of the Whales, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where fossilized skeletons of some of the earliest whales document the evolutionary transition of these mammals from land to sea. The wetlands and waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan, formed from agricultural drainage into desert depressions, have since become one of Egypt's most scenic protected areas.
