Egypt is a big country, 1,000 kilometers from the Mediterranean to Abu Simbel, but the tourist spine is well served: an hour's flight connects Cairo to Luxor or Aswan, cruise ships float you between them, and good highways run to the Red Sea and the desert oases.

Here is how each option really works, and how we use them in our tours.

Domestic Flights

Flying is how Egypt's long distances disappear: Cairo to Luxor or Aswan is about an hour, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh similar. All our flight tours include airport transfers and escorts, so the airport experience, normally Egypt's most stressful, becomes seamless.

Trains

The railway runs the length of the Nile valley. The overnight sleeper Cairo-Luxor-Aswan is a classic experience in its own right, with private cabins and dinner service. Day trains serve locals and budget travelers; first-class seats are inexpensive and fine for the Cairo-Alexandria run.

Roads and Private Drivers

Desert highways connect Cairo to Alexandria (2.5 hours), Ain Sokhna (1.5), Hurghada (5-6), Fayoum and Bahariya. Road travel is comfortable with a good driver and a modern vehicle, exactly what our tours use, and the desert drives, especially to the White Desert, are part of the adventure.

In the Cities

Cairo's metro is cheap, extensive and often faster than traffic. Taxis are plentiful, negotiate or insist on the meter, or use rideshare apps, which remove all negotiation. In Luxor and Aswan, everything tourist-relevant is within a short drive, and taxis and carriages are easy.
