THE JOURNEY AT A GLANCE

A full week on Lake Nasser, from Aswan south to Abu Simbel and back, with two nights at the temples and every significant Nubian site on the way. Departs every Monday.

Four nights each way is a shuttle. Seven nights is the version of Lake Nasser that makes sense, because the boat has room to actually cross the lake rather than run the length of it. You leave Aswan on a Monday and come back the following Monday, having been as far south as Abu Simbel and back with the same sites in between, spread across a week instead of a long day.

The advantage over either one-way sailing is repetition. You pass Kalabsha on the way out and reach it again on the way home. You see Abu Simbel from the deck as you arrive and again from the ground. Amada gets a proper afternoon instead of a hurried one. On a lake this empty, the second visit is rarely the same as the first.

The boat is a full-board houseboat on the same scheduled basis as the short sailings, and the week is spent almost entirely on the water, with the desert closing in on both sides.

  • Two nights at Abu Simbel — An afternoon and a following morning at the temples, rather than a single hurried visit.
  • Every major Nubian site — Kalabsha, Wadi el-Sebua, Amada, Derr, the Tomb of Pennut and Qasr Ibrim, on one route.
  • Kalabsha twice — Seen on the way south and again on the way back, which changes how you read it.
  • A week of silence — Seven nights on a lake that is almost entirely empty, with no light pollution in any direction.

Board in Aswan

Check-in at 13:00, lunch on board at 13:30, tea at 17:00 and dinner at 20:00. The first night is spent in Aswan. Nothing is visited on the first day, which is how the scheduled houseboats work: the crossing begins, and there is nothing to see until the boat is under way.

Kalabsha and Wadi el-Sebua

The relocated temple, then the valley of the lions

Breakfast at 07:30 and the temples of Kalabsha at 08:00, the complex moved to higher ground when the lake rose. The boat sails south at 10:30 to Wadi el-Sebua, with lunch at 13:00 and tea at 17:00, a crew presentation at 19:15 and dinner at 20:00. The second night is at Wadi el-Sebua.

Wadi el-Sebua and Amada

The valley temples, then the oldest building in Nubia

Breakfast at 07:30, the temples of Wadi el-Sebua at 08:00 behind their avenue of lion-headed sphinxes, then under way at 10:30. Lunch at 13:30 and, at 16:00, the rock-cut temple of Amada with the temple of Derr and the Tomb of Pennut. Dinner at 20:00 and a Nubian show at 21:30. The third night is at Amada.

Day04
Qasr Ibrim and Abu Simbel

A fortress from the deck, then the Great Temples

Under way at 06:30, breakfast at 07:30, and fifteen minutes of photographs of Qasr Ibrim from the sun deck at 08:45. The Abu Simbel panorama follows at 12:15 and the Great Temples are visited at 12:30, with the small temple of Nefertari alongside. Dinner at 19:00, and the Sound and Light show available at 20:00. The first of two nights at Abu Simbel.

Abu Simbel

The temples again, in the morning

A second day at Abu Simbel, which is the point of the week. The Great Temples are at their best before the heat builds, and having seen them the previous afternoon you can spend the morning inside them properly rather than being shown around. The Sound and Light show can also be taken tonight. Lunch and the afternoon are on board, and this is the second night at Abu Simbel.

Amada and the return north

Back up the lake, past the same sites

The boat turns north. Amada, Derr and the Tomb of Penut are available again on the way back, seen in the afternoon rather than the late afternoon, and Qasr Ibrim is passed a second time from the deck. The long run north is spent on board, with lunch and dinner on board and the second-last night at anchor.

Wadi el-Sebua and Kalabsha

The last of the temples

The boat works north to Wadi el-Sebua for the temples, then on to Kalabsha, the last site of the week and the first one you would have passed coming the other way. Dinner on board and the final night moored near Aswan.

Breakfast at 08:00 and check-out at 09:00 in Aswan. The cruise ends and you are transferred to your hotel or the airport.

Sailing day

Departs Aswan every Monday and returns the following Monday. Seven nights, eight days.

Why a week

The one-way sailings are shuttles. Seven nights lets the boat cross the lake properly and gives you two visits to the temples that make the week worth more than either short version.

Pickup and drop-off

Transfers by private air-conditioned vehicle in Aswan at the start and the end of the week.

The boat

A full-board Lake Nasser houseboat with shaded decks, air-conditioned cabins and en-suite facilities. Most of the week is spent on deck.

How does this differ from the four-night cruise? +

It is the same route with the middle taken out. Four nights goes Aswan to Abu Simbel in a rush; seven nights goes there and back at a pace that gives you a second morning at Abu Simbel and a second look at Amada and Kalabsha.

Is a week too long on a lake? +

Guests who take the short sail and then this one tend to say the short one is rushed. A week on Lake Nasser is a week of very little to do, which is the point if the alternative is another four nights of transfers.

What is the best time of year? +

October to March. Over the summer the days are long and hot, and much of the week is spent on deck because the temples are visited in the mornings.
