Seven nights upriver, the long way: Luxor over two full days, the temples at a slower pace, an optional dawn at Abu Simbel, and Philae and the Nubian Museum at the end.

Seven nights is the difference between being on the river and being on a boat. The sites between Luxor and Aswan do not change over seven nights, but everything about how you see them does: you stop rushing, you get the west bank in full rather than in a morning, you are at Kom Ombo twice, and there is room for an optional dawn at Abu Simbel without it wrecking the day.

This itinerary is built for people who have been to Egypt before, or who are coming for the river as much as the temples. A first visit is often better spent on the four-night cruise, where you are not fighting the urge to get off the boat.

The rhythm is deliberate. Luxor gets two full days, the Esna lock and Temple of Khnum get a morning, Edfu and Kom Ombo are visited slowly with time afterwards on board, and the seventh day is in Aswan, where Philae, the High Dam and the Nubian Museum are all in one day if you want them. The hot air balloon over Luxor and the dawn visit to Abu Simbel are the two optional additions that most people take.

  • Two full days in Luxor — Karnak and Luxor Temple, then the west bank including the Valley of the Kings, at a proper pace.
  • Optional Abu Simbel at dawn — The Great Temples at first light, which is when they are worth the very early start. Not included; ask and we will price it.
  • Kom Ombo and the Crocodile Museum — The double temple, then the museum that explains why the Sobek cult was here at all.
  • The last day in Aswan — Philae, the High Dam and the Nubian Museum, all within reach of the town.
  • A hot air balloon, if you want one — Over Luxor on the morning before boarding, at dawn when the wind is still.

Luxor

Boarding and the east bank

The cruise boards in Luxor and lunch is served on board. In the afternoon you go out to the east bank for Karnak and the temple of Luxor, with time to do both properly rather than rushing. Dinner on board and the first night at Luxor. If you have taken the optional balloon, it is flown on the morning of this day, which means an early start before the board.

Luxor

The west bank, then under way

A full day on the west bank. The morning goes to the Valley of the Kings, and the afternoon to the temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, the Colossi of Memnon, and the long stretch of necropolis that runs north from them. You are back aboard for a late lunch and the boat is under way during the afternoon, which means you sail out of Luxor as the light goes.

Esna

The lock and the temple below street level

The morning is spent at Esna, where the boat goes through the lock in daylight and the Temple of Khnum, which sits nine metres below street level, is dug into the modern town. After lunch the cruise continues south toward Edfu, at an easy pace. The third night is moored on the river, which on a seven-night cruise is a chance to be on deck with nowhere to be.

Edfu

The Temple of Horus, and an afternoon without a plan

The boat reaches Edfu and stays moored, so the day has no timetable. The temple of Horus is visited in the cool of the morning and there is time afterwards to sit on the roof, walk the town, or go back to the temple if something in the sanctuary caught you. Dinner on board, and the fourth night at Edfu.

Kom Ombo

The double temple and the Crocodile Museum

Breakfast on board and then the temple of Kom Ombo, the only one in Egypt with two complete sets of courts and sanctuaries. After it, the Crocodile Museum next door, which is where the mummified crocodiles are and which is also the place to find out why Sobek was worshipped here. Lunch on board, then the afternoon at leisure as the boat works south. Dinner on board and the fifth night on the river.

Aswan

An optional dawn at Abu Simbel

This is the day the long cruise is really for. Abu Simbel is available as an optional excursion, and it is worth it for one reason: the temples are best before sunrise, and the light on the four colossal figures of Ramses II at about 06:30 is the reason people change their plans to come. It is a long day by road, roughly 3.5 hours each way, and it is not in the price. If you would rather not, the boat sails on to Aswan and you arrive mid-morning, which is a perfectly good day at the Nubian Museum. The sixth night is moored in Aswan.

Aswan

Philae, the High Dam and the Nubian Museum

A full day in Aswan, which the shorter cruises do not get. Philae in the morning, before the heat, then the High Dam, and the Nubian Museum, which is the best single explanation of Nubian life in the country and a good place to understand what the last two days of the river were about. There is also the botanical garden if you want an hour of quiet. Dinner on board, seventh night.

Disembarkation

Breakfast on board and the cruise ends at around 09:00. You are transferred to your hotel in Aswan, to the airport, or to the station, depending on where you are going next.

A few things worth knowing.

Who this is for

People who have been to Egypt before, or who are coming for the river rather than the sites. On a first visit the four-night cruise is often the better choice, because you are not spending a week resisting the urge to get off the boat.

The two optional extras

The hot air balloon over Luxor on the morning of day one, and Abu Simbel on day six. Neither is in the price. Both are the two things most people add, and both are worth adding if the early starts suit you.

Pickup and drop-off

Transfers by private air-conditioned vehicle, from your hotel in Luxor and back to your hotel in Aswan.

Sailing days

The vessel runs on a fixed weekly schedule. Sailing days are confirmed with the booking rather than assumed here.

Is Abu Simbel included? +

No. It is offered as an optional full-day excursion on day six, roughly 3.5 hours of road each way, and it needs to be arranged in advance. Ask us and we will price it.

Is the balloon included? +

No. It is optional, on the morning of day one, because the wind is calmest at dawn and the light over the west bank is at its best then.

What is the difference from the four-night cruise? +

The same river with three extra nights. Luxor gets two full days instead of one, Aswan gets a full day instead of a morning, and the days at Edfu and Kom Ombo stop being timed.

We have never been to Egypt. Is seven nights too long? +

It is not too long, but it is more time on the water than some people want. Many first-timers do the four nights and add Abu Simbel separately, which is the same trip in fewer days.
