History

Ain Sokhna, whose name means "hot spring" in Arabic, takes its identity from natural thermal springs along this stretch of the Gulf of Suez, said to have been valued since pharaonic and Roman times for their warm, mineral-rich waters. The area's proximity to the capital, roughly an hour's drive from Cairo, has shaped its development far more than any single historical monument.

From the 1990s onward, Ain Sokhna grew rapidly as a resort retreat for residents of Cairo, who found in its beaches and gated developments the closest convenient escape to the Red Sea coast without the longer journey required to reach Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh. This accessibility has made it one of the most popular weekend destinations for Egyptian families.

Ain Sokhna has also grown in importance as a working port, with an expanding role in regional shipping and occasional cruise calls, allowing some visitors to combine a short Red Sea break with excursions back toward Cairo and the pyramids.
